Comic Book Syndicate’s 12 Days of Christmast: Artist Edition continues right here…
Michael Golden is a commercial artist who became prominent in the comics industry through Marvel’s licensed comic Micronauts, and his beautiful painted covers for The Saga of Crystar and G.I.Joe. Golden did not exclusively work in comics, but his infrequent forays into the superhero genre (X-men, Batman, Mister Miracle) are enough to put him on our holiday list. Golden effortlessly combines a realistic figure with cartoon-like exaggeration.
Perhaps the first American superhero artist with no antecedent, Golden ignored the conventions of superhero art in 1970’s and recreated them in a style that heavily influenced Art Adams, Todd McFarlane and (unfortunately) Rob Liefeld and their imitators. He could be the most influential artist of the late Bronze Age.
