When ship’s Doctor Claire Finn refuses Commander Bortus’ request to perform gender reassignment surgery on their newborn child –a standard Moclan practice on the very rare occasion a female is born to their all-male race. Bortus and his partner Klyden are dead set on the procedure taking place and request a ship from their home world come to the Orville to collect them. However, Gordon and LeMar are able to convince Bortus’ that his child remaining female would not hinder her existence. This action takes the ship’s crew, and this week’s episode, to Brotus’ home planet of Moclus where the crew defends the procedure in court, where it’s up to Kelly to prove to the Moclans that leaving the baby alone would be the best course of action.
