The Syndicate examines the reason’s behind the Dark Knight’s extraordinary popularity.
Julie Sando joins Danny-Boy, J’orge & Mike-EL for this in-depth look at Batman’s popularity. Batman’s popularity has waxed and waned on the years, and at one point in the early 1960s, he was on the verge of cancellation. Bouncing back with the release of the campy TV series, Batman’s success revitalized sagging comic book sales and (once again) made him a house-hold name.
Upon the release of Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film, Batmania swept North American swept the nation, and has existed in some form or another ever since. Batman sets the pace for the other DC superheroes, and often for Marvel’s heroes as well (Spider-man was purportedly rebooted in 2012 to bring him closer to the style of Batman Begins).
Many other characters created in the 1930s (The Shadow, Dick Tracy, the Phantom, even Superman) seem outdated and quaint by today’s standards. Why has the Caped Crusader endured, beyond all others? The Syndicate has their theories…
